Part 3: Demera was 8 months pregnant …
20 years old, 8 months pregnant…and newly diagnosed with breast cancer. Women of all ages and backgrounds can get breast cancer. Detection is key in survival. Watch Demera’s story of strength and triumph.
Dr. Yepez talks BRCA and hereditary breast cancer
Most breast cancer is spontaneous, so a breast mass should never be ignored. I speak to this topic as well as genetic and family history risk factors in the video.

I was watching Demera’s video and felt so sad hearing that such a young person, in this case a young pregnant mom, was dealing with a life threatening disease. Not that at any age is anyone ready to hear they have cancer, however, I just remember how clueless I was on the topic at that tender, young age. I did not have any issues thankfully, however, I really wonder when would I have found out if I did? I can say with certainty that I did not examine my body then primarily because I did not know enough, if anything at all, about breast cancers. As I have had many discussions with my doctors about ways to educate and examine myself I think about all the 20 year olds out there that are in same mind set as I was. Dr. Yepez, I think that this story should be shared with many college young women throughout campuses and perhaps have you and Demera as speakers on this topic. As sad as the story is, it made me so happy to watch Demera look so strong, wise, and full of optimism about her future, as she should. Please continue to share your story in all and every way, because it is extremely inspirational. Wish you all the best young lady!!!!
