Be Your Own Best Valentine…Love Your Body!

lyb
A year ago,  I decided to add “blogger” to my already overwhelmed job descriptions and responsibilities.  On February 10, 2014, with the help of some great friends, I was able to launch my website “DrYepez.com”.  It has definitely been a labor of love….and as an Ob/Gyn, I know labor!  I started off blogging twice a week, then once a week, now I’m lucky if I get a good article out to you once a month. (sorry!)
I haven’t stopped, not only because I enjoy the process of communicating helpful information to you, but also because I feel a sense of obligation.  I feel obligated to provide information that will educate, engage, and empower readers about their bodies and their health.  As long as I know I have one follower, that one person might reach out and educate a few other people, and those few other people will do the same….and suddenly change is made.
The change we need as women is to become more aware of our bodies.  I still see so many educated, adult women who are misinformed on basic anatomy and function of our female organs.  And more disturbing, there is still such a hesitancy to discuss these issues with our doctors or in an open manner.
A survey carried out last year found that over half of women still don’t feel comfortable using the word vagina, and many were unable to acurately label their female organs on a body chart when asked to do so…..something is not right.
This weekend is Valentine’s Day and in honor of spreading some self love and encouraging woman to become engaged with their bodies, I thought we would do something fun and interactive for this next post!
Did I also mention it’s “DrYepez.com’s” FIRST YEAR ANNIVERSARY!  So help me celebrate!
As women we are always so negative about our bodies.  Ask a woman what she doesn’t like about her body and you better have a comfy seat and a glass of wine because you are going to be there for a while!
Ask a woman what she likes about herself, and you will be lucky if you get an answer.
This year I challenge you to be your own “Best Valentine”.
Start by sharing with us what you love about your body and why!  Include a picture and make it fun!
If you are lucky enough to have a daughter, neice, god-daughter, or other special young woman in your life get them involved.
When we are negative about our own bodies…they are listening too!  We try so hard to make our young girls strong, but we don’t realize how our own body image effects the way they view themselves.
Below is an awesome Dove Ad that shows exactly this point.
In order to demand better education and accept those changes we are asking for, we must first realize that we deserve them and that are bodies are worth fighting for.
So start posting–pics or no pics! Let’s here all the great things about you from your luscious locks to your precious toes!
Love you ladies!  Thank you for sticking with me for a whole year!
